It all started on Sunday when I had a complete meltdown at a family owned grocery. We picked out a nice plump Amish turkey and at the cash register found that the seal had been compromised. The cashier politely asked if I would like another, and I in all my meltdown frenzy said, "no it's quite all right." I just couldn't go back into that mess called "supermarket shopping." I guess that's what I get for trying to be organized and on top of the holiday.
Yesterday, the plan was spectacular, I was to bake pies with my very talented chef friend who also turned out to have some turkey drama of her own. Some crazy lady in Chicago falsely claimed that my friend had ordered 3 turkeys (totaling 60 + pounds!) and wanted her to pick them up. That situation somehow resolved itself, though the crazy lady was quite unprofessional about it all, I guess she didn't take the correct meds that day or something.
Before our baking extravaganza, my friend took me to a local butcher and I picked up their last fresh turkey. I had originally wanted a 15 lb turkey but this guy is 20 lbs! This prompted my hubby to measure the various cooling units we have in the house and he had to perform complicated math based on exactly how he was going to brine the turkey for 24 hours. Whatever, not my department.
So for all our listeners overseas, WHY do we Americans make such a fuss over a bird? I can't tell you about other families, but this 20 lb gobbler sitting here is bringing my family to my home from very far away. It gives many hard workers a day off and a great meal. And most importantly it reminds us for just one day a year to be thankful.
So on this wonderful Thanksgiving week, I would like to say that I am especially grateful to you listeners from all over the world, you have definitely made my days a little brighter and happier, thank you all!
